On February 3rd, 2021 the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Leadership in Rural Medicine Programs launched their third season of the podcast This Rural Mission. This Rural Mission podcast was started in 2017 to promote rural issues to young professionals and provide a new narrative on rural communities within media. In addition, the project has been prInfographic of Season 3 omoted at state and national conferences and peaked the interest of stakeholders across the nation. The project’s major success has been nominated as one of the Top Rural Podcasts to Listen to in 2021 by the website FeedSpot.

The effort of this podcast is important because our mission at the Leadership in Rural Medicine programs is to positively impact the rural medical workforce and thusly bolster rural economies, opportunities, and social change. Reaching a young professional audience with positive and interesting rural media is one way we do this.

This season we are highlighting MidMichigan Health’s own Marita Hattem-Schiffman in our episode titled “Women Rural II”. We are also discussing arts in rural communities, the impact of COVID19 on rural medical education, farmer mental health and suicide, and the 20-year rural medical education partnership MSU College of Human Medicine has had with the Scheurer Hospital System.
