Hear from Leadership in Rural Medicine graduates from the Upper Peninsula Region Campus.
Spending my Late Clinical Experience years at the UP Campus was pivotal and truly a highlight of my College of Human Medicine experience. Born and raised in a rural, medically underserved town in Northern New York, I was drawn to the Leadership in Rural Medicine program for the opportunity to train in a community like my own. The close-knit nature of the community is what makes the UP Campus special. I felt supported every step of the way, especially through the busy clerkship days and navigating my unique circumstances as a Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) student. The small group and often 1:1 learning environment in clerkships/electives helped me hone my clinical skills ahead of residency and step outside my comfort zone. My current patients, military-connected youth, face many of the same obstacles my patients in the UP faced (e.g., access to care, food insecurity, etc.), and the same resourcefulness prevails. Finally, the UP landscape is beautiful, and the people are super friendly. What more could you ask for?
